The Berggruen Institute was established in 2010 to develop foundational ideas about how to reshape political and social institutions in the face of these great transformations. We work across cultures, disciplines, and political boundaries, engaging great thinkers to develop and promote long-term answers to the biggest challenges of the 21st Century.

Gabriel Kahan

He works at the intersection of art, pedagogy, and collective intelligence. For over 10 years he worked closely with local and national governments, NGO’s and schools, creating and deploying online educational content, impacting over 4 Million students and teachers in the US and the Americas. Between 2014-2017 Gabriel was a researcher and lecturer at MIT’s Program in Art, Culture and Technology where he developed a collaborative learning method to help diverse groups of people from varied backgrounds and abilities identify, understand and express common yet complex situations, through deep thinking, design management and manufacturing, and artistic reification.

Jeffrey Inaba

He is an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design where he teaches in the Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design Program’s Urban Strategy curriculum. He is the co-founder of Inaba Williams Architects. He’s interested in the knowledge that’s gained from the profession–especially ideas about urbanism, typology, and building technologies. His firm is based in Los Angeles and Brooklyn and its clients include Red Bull Music Academy, YouTube, Whitney Museum of American Art, BMW/MINI, New Museum, Van Alen Institute, and Public Art Norway. Before starting Inaba Williams he was a principal of AMO.

Valeria Ospital

She is a Lecturer at UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design, where she teaches in the Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design Program’s Urban Strategy curriculum. She studied architecture from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires. She holds an MS in Design Theory and Pedagogy from SCI-Arc, and was an Assistant Teacher at Studio Lynn in Universität für angewandte Kunst in Vienna. Prior to this, Ospital taught at Di Tella in core and thesis studios, as well as aesthetics seminars. She was also involved in SCI-Arc's research department’s project on developing alternative ways of measuring displacement pressures in Los Angeles.


Emile Mack

He rose from firefighter to second-in-command of the LAFD, serving the second largest city in the nation, 4,000 employees and over half a billion-dollar budget. Emile has inspired, led, and partnered with all levels of government, non-profit, business, political and community leaders as Chief Deputy, second-in-command and throughout his career.


Tony Varela

Tony Varela is the assistant Chief at Los Angeles Fire Department. Field assignments included both Divisions. Staff assignments as an Assistant Chief included, Special Operations, Homeland Security, Training, Supply and Maintenance.

Alberto Garcia

Alberto Garcia is an architect from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and is participating in the Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Planning program at UCLA
