UCLA AUD Wildfire Workshops
A Coordination & Conservation Plan for High-Risk LA Neighborhoods
1. New Era of Fire
With the build-up of fuel from decades of accumulated brush, wildfire poses an extremely high risk in densely populated brush hillsides. As local drought conditions worsen and temperatures rise, fires will occur more frequently and with greater intensity.
UCLA AUD, in conjunction with the LA City Fire Department, other first response agencies and the support of the Berggruen Institute, is organizing a series of community workshops to develop a wildfire prevention and mitigation plan to help protect high-risk neighborhoods. The collaborative, inclusive workshops will encourage residents to share their concerns in order to create a thorough understanding of the vulnerabilities that communities face with potential wildfires in their neighborhoods.
Based on the information collected during the workshops, the UCLA AUD team will prepare recommendations to improve public safety, property protection, and agencies’ responses for residents living in the Santa Monica Mountains Wildland Urban Interface.
